He Was Found Under a Bridge Weighing Just 92 Pounds — Four Years Later, His Life Looks Completely Different

Four years ago, Danny Ellerd was living under an Interstate 40 overpass in Oklahoma City, trapped in years of addiction and weighing only about 92 pounds.

Police initially encountered him because of outstanding warrants. But when they saw how seriously ill he was, the situation changed. Instead of taking him to jail, officers took him to an emergency room, where doctors worked to save his life and treat a serious infection affecting his hand.

That moment became the beginning of a completely different chapter.

From Homelessness to Recovery

After leaving the hospital, Danny entered the Hope Is Alive recovery program with little more than a Walmart bag of clothes.

His recovery did not happen overnight. He had spent years struggling with addiction and homelessness, and rebuilding his life required consistent support, structure and determination. Hope Is Alive says he eventually completed recovery programs and began helping others who were facing similar struggles.

Danny has also spoken publicly about how addiction had taken control of his life and how recovery helped him begin rebuilding his health and purpose.

Then He Went Back to School

In 2023, Danny began studying at Oklahoma State University–Oklahoma City while also working and taking on responsibilities within the recovery community.

He studied computer information systems and maintained a 4.0 GPA. His academic progress eventually led to major achievements, including associate-level degrees in technology-related fields. His university has also recognized his academic performance and commitment to helping people experiencing homelessness and addiction.

What makes his story especially striking is how different his life looked only a few years earlier.

From sleeping under a bridge and weighing 92 pounds to sitting in a college classroom and earning top grades, the change happened gradually—one decision at a time.

Now He’s Helping Others

Danny has chosen to use his own experience to help people who are still struggling.

He has worked in homelessness services and has shared his story through his book, “Recovery Is Possible,” with the goal of encouraging people dealing with addiction and homelessness.

His journey doesn’t erase the difficult years he experienced. Instead, it shows how dramatically a person’s circumstances can change when recovery, support and opportunity come together.

Four years ago, Danny was fighting simply to survive.

Today, he is building a career, helping others and sharing a message that recovery can create a very different future
