Why Octopuses Have Three Hearts

Octopuses are among the most unusual animals in the ocean. Their flexible bodies, sophisticated nervous systems, blue blood, and three hearts help them survive in environments where oxygen, pressure, and movement create constant challenges.

How the three hearts work

Two branchial hearts pump blood toward the gills. At the gills, oxygen from seawater enters the bloodstream. The systemic heart then pumps oxygen-rich blood through the rest of the body. This division of labor lets an octopus extract oxygen efficiently while supporting its active lifestyle.

Why the main heart slows during swimming

When an octopus swims by forcing water through its mantle, the systemic heart stops beating or works less effectively. Swimming therefore requires considerable energy and can leave the animal tired. Crawling across the seafloor is often more efficient, allowing the octopus to search for prey while using less energy.

Why octopus blood is blue

Octopus blood uses hemocyanin, a copper-based protein, to carry oxygen. Hemocyanin is blue when oxygenated and works particularly well in cold water with low oxygen levels. This adaptation helps octopuses live in a wide range of marine habitats.

A body built for survival

An octopus can squeeze through surprisingly small openings because it has no rigid skeleton. Its arms contain rows of sensitive suckers that help it taste and feel objects. Chromatophores allow rapid changes in color and pattern, while specialized skin can alter texture to resemble rocks or coral.

These abilities are useful for hunting and defense. An octopus may ambush a crab, hide from a predator, release ink, or imitate its surroundings. Its intelligence also helps it learn routes, solve simple puzzles, and remember successful hunting strategies.

Life on the seafloor

Most octopuses live alone and spend much of their time exploring reefs, caves, and sandy bottoms. They use camouflage rather than speed, choosing patience and surprise over long pursuits. Their three-heart circulatory system is one part of a larger collection of adaptations that makes them successful ocean predators.
