That is exactly what happened when photographs of Shaq relaxing aboard a luxury yacht in Spain began circulating across social media again.
The images quickly attracted attention because of the woman seen alongside him.
Soon, posts were claiming that the former Los Angeles Lakers superstar had been photographed traveling with his 21-year-old girlfriend, creating thousands of comments about the supposed age difference.
There was just one problem.
The viral caption did not accurately reflect what was known about the photographs.
The images were not recent at all.
They were originally taken in 2019, during a trip to Spain when O’Neal was 47 years old. At the time, Shaq was traveling in Europe while also making appearances as DJ Diesel.
The woman appearing in the photographs was later identified in several reports as model Danielle Dilworth.
Those reports placed her age at approximately 27 at the time—not 21.
Even more importantly, there has never been reliable confirmation that Dilworth was Shaq’s girlfriend.
Some reporting from the period described her as part of the group spending time with him aboard the yacht rather than identifying the two as a confirmed romantic couple.
The pictures themselves show a relaxed vacation scene.
Shaq can be seen smiling, joking with friends and enjoying the sunshine aboard the yacht near Formentera, Spain.
In other photos from the same outing, the 7-foot-1 basketball legend appears ready to jump from the yacht into the water as other people watch nearby.
Nothing about the images themselves confirms a romantic relationship.
Yet years later, the pictures took on an entirely different life online.
A caption circulated describing Shaq as a 52-year-old man traveling with his 21-year-old girlfriend.
Because Shaq was 52 when one version of the post circulated in 2024, many users understandably assumed the photograph had also been taken recently.
It had not.
That small change in context transformed a five-year-old vacation photograph into what appeared to be a completely new celebrity dating story.
And once the post began spreading, thousands of people reacted before checking when the picture was actually taken.
Some users criticized the supposed age gap.
Others defended Shaq and argued that the personal lives of consenting adults were nobody else’s business.
Still others began investigating the photograph and quickly pointed out that both the date and the description attached to the image were misleading.
A community note later added to one widely shared version of the post also highlighted that the photograph came from 2019 and that the woman had never been publicly confirmed as Shaq’s girlfriend.
Interestingly, the same photograph later resurfaced in another completely different context.
In 2024, Shaq jokingly posted an edited version in which rapper Drake’s face had been digitally placed over the woman in the original yacht image as part of the viral “BBL Drizzy” joke.
That post again brought attention to the old Spain photographs and demonstrated just how easily a single celebrity image can continue resurfacing years after it was originally taken.
Shaq himself is certainly no stranger to dating rumors.
Because he remains highly visible through television, business ventures, music performances and social media, photographs showing him with women frequently become subjects of speculation.
