A 15-year-old boy survived for nearly two days on an overturned skiff in Alaska’s freezing Bering Sea after the boat capsized while he was fishing with his older brother and cousin.

The teenager, Derek Parker Aghnaanga, was rescued Monday near St. Lawrence Island by the fishing vessel The Northwest Explorer. His 35-year-old brother, Sidney Kulowiyi, and their cousin died in the accident.

The group had left the village of Savoonga on Friday and planned to return Sunday. After family members reported them missing, the U.S. Coast Guard launched a search. A Coast Guard aircraft spotted Aghnaanga Monday morning and contacted the fishing vessel.

Captain Adam White said the teenager survived water temperatures of about 50°F (10°C) and suffered from hypothermia. The crew warmed him with blankets and hot packs.

Aghnaanga’s family celebrated after hearing that he had been found alive. His aunt said fishing is an important part of life and survival in their community.
